New superman game rocksteady series#
So what does this mean? Will players be both Superman and the Suicide Squad? Are they Superman hunting the Suicide Squad or the Suicide Squad hunting Superman? What kind of game are we getting here?Įxpect more details when DC Fandome launches on August 22nd, and expect that the game will be for next-gen consoles, the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. The poster shows the Man of Steel with his back turned and the Suicide Squad logo as crosshairs on his head. With DC’s Fandome on the horizon, the studio has now teased their upcoming game, and it’s not just Superman-it’s also Suicide Squad. But if anyone had earned the benefit of the doubt, it would be Rocksteady.
It’s been five years since Arkham Knight and developer Rocksteady has been silent since then although there’s been rumors that they were working on a Superman game, which would be a curious move since there has never been a good Superman game, particularly because it’s hard to have fun when your character is always in god mode. The worlds feel gritty and fleshed-out, and while the move to an open-world design led to mixed results (trying to do stealth missions in a Batmobile remains an ill-conceived decision), their impact can’t be denied. Arkham Asylum in particular lets you feel like you’re Batman as you prey on helpless criminals. While the series was a bit of diminishing returns with the follow-ups Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight, no one could deny that the studio built a game that understood Batman and his world. We know that the developer gave the caped crusader a strong farewell with Arkham Knight, but have they truly given up on the cowl of the bat? Or is it time for the man of steel to take center stage? Only time will tell.Rocksteady delivered what was easily one of the best superhero video games of all-time with Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Keep in mind that the attached image made its return on a 4chan thread, we should still keep an open mind. I wasnt the biggest Arkham Knight fan, but I think Rocksteady are talented enough to create a hook that makes a potential Superman game compelling. While 4chan is one of those sources that is more or less a hit or a miss, you have to keep that salt shaker right next to you and be ready to build your own salt mill with the pinches you will need. No I just mean that just like talented writers can make Superman a compelling comic story despite his warts, talented game developers can create a good game around his character as well. You can probably guess why Rocksteady had sort of set out on a fool’s errand. The execution was much more do-able for Batman because even though the Dark Knight is feared, he is still susceptible to mortality, while Superman transcends mortality (Yes, I know he has died in the comics, but those were under extremely difficult circumstances such as Doomsday). Can't wait ?Įven a prestigious studio like Rocksteady will have a lot of weight on their shoulders to make a unique Superman game the likes of which no one has ever seen before, but that would mean putting a man who is practically invincible to the idea that he can be killed. I know we're not talking right now… but when we do, people are going to lose their minds. While the brilliant minds at Rocksteady have given us the best superhero based video game since Spiderman 2 on the PS2, the studio once dabbled in the idea of a Superman game.Īs you can suspect, making a game on Superman has never worked out well for any developer, especially the infamous Superman 64. This is only one video amongst a dozen other examples of the details of the game dissected and theories being speculated. Rocksteady, the developers behind the Batman Arkham series, at one point did tease about a potential Superman game that was a rough work in progress at best but did manage to make many steps in its development.
